Standing Sound Waves
★Exhibit Content: Standing Waves ★Interaction: Electromechanical Interaction ★Operation: 1. Press the "Start" button, and the speaker begins to operate; 2. Select and press different frequency knobs to observe the fluctuation changes of particles in the tube at different frequencies. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit mainly consists of an acrylic tube, speaker, solid particles, digital display, and buttons. Through interactive experience, it demonstrates to the audience the vibration waveforms of sounds at different frequencies. During participation, the audience presses the start button, adjusts the frequency knob, and observes the phenomenon of foam particles inside the glass tube "dancing" with the sound waves emitted by the speaker. ★Scientific Principle: A standing wave is formed by the superposition of two waves with the same amplitude, frequency, and vibration direction but opposite propagation directions. The points with maximum amplitude are called antinodes, and the points with zero amplitude are called nodes. When sound waves enter the glass tube and reflect from the other end, if the tube length is exactly an integer multiple of half a wavelength, an interesting standing wave phenomenon occurs: inside the tube, some areas have white foam particles vibrating violently, called antinodes; while other areas have no vibration, called nodes. For sounds of different frequencies, the positions of antinodes and nodes are different, and the distances between antinodes or nodes also vary. When we adjust the frequency of the sound, we see the sound seemingly dancing.
