Music Box

Acoustics

★Exhibit Content: Photoelectric signal control, generation and patterns of music ★Interaction: Electromechanical interaction ★Operation: 1) View the graphic panels to learn related knowledge; 2) Select appropriate note rods to pop up and rotate the drum. When the small stick plucks the hammer, it drives the hammer to strike the reed above, causing the reed to vibrate and produce sound; 3) Press the start button to listen to the sound of the demonstration structure. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit mainly consists of a handwheel, manual music drum, electric music drum, sound-producing device, transmission mechanism, note rods, etc. Turning the crank drives the music drum with note rods inserted on its surface to rotate at a constant speed. When the note rods pass the sound board bars, they pluck the reeds, causing the reeds to vibrate at a set frequency and produce sound. Two drums are provided: one manual drum controlled by a crank, and one electric drum started by a button. Note rods are installed on the outside of the drum; pressing the note rods controls whether they protrude or retract. ★Scientific Principle: The principle of a music box is that power drives a music drum with small protrusions on its surface to rotate at a constant speed. When the protrusions pass the sound board bars, they pluck the reeds (first slowly lifting them, then suddenly releasing them), causing the reeds to vibrate at a set frequency and produce the set sound. The sound board part of a music box is made by cutting thin strips of equal length but different thickness and width from an elastic steel plate (thickness and width vary according to the set vibration frequency). A protrusion on the music drum is equivalent to a note in a musical score. A music drum is set with protrusions in a regular pattern. As the drum rotates, the protrusions pass the edge of the sound board. Due to the different protrusions, different sounds are produced. In addition, damping causes the drum to rotate at a constant speed. A full rotation of an ordinary movement typically takes 8-17 seconds, which is enough to express the climax of a piece; of course, high-end music boxes usually cycle between 30 seconds and 8 minutes.
