Pan Flute (Music in the Air)

Acoustics

★Exhibit Content: Interactive acoustic science popularization model experience of sound resonance and pitch variation of vibrating air columns ★Interaction: Approach the tube openings to listen, and compare the resonance sounds of different air columns through model interaction ★Operation: 1. Bring your ear close to the opening of each sound tube and listen carefully to the sound coming from inside. 2. Approach tubes of different lengths one by one to listen, compare the pitch differences of the sounds produced by each tube, and look for the pattern of sound variation. ★Exhibit Description: The "Pan Flute" is a tabletop science popularization exhibit on the theme of acoustic resonance, belonging to the acoustics science popularization area and recommended by the KexMall exhibit store. The exhibit uses a white and blue square sheet metal tabletop cabinet, with a stainless steel inclined bracket mounted on the tabletop, on which 7 colored sound tubes of uniform diameter and different length gradients are fixed. The enclosed air column inside the tubes can resonate with ambient sound waves. Visitors approaching the tube openings can hear resonance sounds of different pitches, intuitively demonstrating the correspondence between air column length, vibration frequency, and pitch, simulating the sound production principle of the traditional pan flute instrument. ★Scientific Principle: 1. An enclosed air column forms inside the tube. The air column has a natural vibration frequency. External ambient sound waves excite the air column to vibrate, producing resonance and amplifying the sound. 2. The length of the sound tube determines the length of the air column. The longer the air column, the lower the natural vibration frequency and the lower the pitch; the shorter the air column, the higher the vibration frequency and the higher the pitch. The 7 sound tubes of different lengths correspond to 7 resonance sounds of different frequencies, intuitively presenting the pattern of pitch variation.
