Pipe Music

Acoustics

★Exhibit Content: Frequency of sound, resonance of sound ★Interaction: Mechanical interaction ★Operation: Use the striking board to hit different tubes and play your own music. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of curved pipes of different lengths, a display stand, beaters, etc. The stand is not enclosed, allowing direct observation of the pipe shapes. The pipe openings extending from the tabletop correspond one-to-one with the musical notes pasted on the stand. The beaters are fixed to the tabletop with retractable cords to prevent them from falling and getting lost. During participation, the visitor picks up a beater and strikes different pipe openings to hear sounds of different pitches. Visitors can freely improvise a tune by striking the pipe openings, and can also play a piece of music according to the musical score on the tabletop. ★Scientific Principle: The pipes contain air columns. Due to differences in pipe length and diameter, the volume of the air column inside each pipe varies, resulting in different natural vibration frequencies for each pipe. When the frequency of air vibration in the environment matches or is close to the natural frequency of the air column in the pipe, resonance occurs. The smaller the volume of the air column in the pipe, the higher its natural frequency and the higher the pitch; conversely, the larger the volume of the air column in the pipe, the lower its natural frequency and the lower the pitch.
