Acoustics

★Exhibit Content: Characteristics of Sound ★Interaction: Mechanical Interaction ★Operation: Visitors turn the disc to make the steel balls roll and listen to the sounds produced by the collision between the balls and the metal steel rods. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of an interactive platform, a metal cylindrical disc, a rotating device, protective acrylic, and interactive steel balls. The platform is a circular device. When we turn the disc, the steel balls start rolling in the metal steel rods. The impact of the steel balls on the rods produces different sounds. Because the steel balls never travel the same path twice when rolling in the metal rods, each time a new melody is produced. ★Scientific Principle: The characteristics of sound can be described by three elements: loudness, pitch, and timbre. The subjective perception of sound intensity by the human ear is called loudness; the subjective perception of sound frequency by the human ear is called pitch; timbre is the characteristic that allows people to distinguish between two sounds with the same loudness and pitch, or it can be said to be the comprehensive response of the human ear to sound waves of various frequencies and intensities. Pitch is mainly related to the frequency of the sound wave. The higher the frequency of the sound wave, the higher the pitch. Objects made of the same material but of different sizes produce different sounds when struck.
