Pipe Music

Acoustics

★Exhibit Content: Acoustic science experience of air column resonance and the relationship between pitch and air column volume ★Interaction: Manual striking mechanical interactive demonstration ★Operation: Pick up the included striking mallet and strike the metal pipes of different lengths and diameters in sequence to feel the difference in timbre brought by air column resonance. ★Exhibit Description: The "Air Piano" is an interactive exhibit for acoustic vibration science popularization, belonging to the acoustic physics exhibition area, and is a recommended exhibit by KexMall. The exhibit consists of an integrally formed metal stand, five curved metal pipes of different lengths, blue sealed pipe ends, and a matching striking mallet. The multiple pipes form enclosed air columns of different volumes. When the pipes are struck, the air columns resonate, and different pipes produce different pitches, forming a simple musical scale, intuitively demonstrating the correspondence between air column volume, natural vibration frequency, and pitch. ★Scientific Principle: Each enclosed air column inside the pipe has a fixed natural vibration frequency. The length and diameter of the pipe determine the volume of the air column. External striking generates vibration; when the vibration frequency matches the natural frequency of the air column, resonance occurs. The smaller the air column volume, the higher the natural vibration frequency, and the higher the pitch; the larger the air column volume, the lower the natural vibration frequency, and the lower the pitch. Through intuitive comparison of multiple differentiated pipes, the exhibit clearly demonstrates the phenomenon of resonance and the pattern of pitch variation, and is a physical model of the sound production principle of wind instruments.
