Melody Memories of the Tape Era

Acoustics

★Exhibit Content: History of magnetic tape audio development, interactive science experience of audio storage and sound wave propagation ★Interaction: Electromechanical audio interactive demonstration ★Operation: 1. Wear the matching headphones on both sides; 2. Press the button in the center of the tape gear to start audio playback, press again to switch to the next track; 3. The device automatically loops playback, and stops automatically after ten minutes of inactivity. ★Exhibit Description: "Melody Memories of the Magnetic Tape Era" is a floor-standing interactive exhibit for science popularization of acoustics and the history of audio storage development. It belongs to the acoustics science exhibition area and is a recommended exhibit by the PopsciCat Exhibit Store. The exhibit adopts a giant retro magnetic tape-shaped floor-standing structure, composed of a cold-rolled steel plate baked-paint body, acrylic transparent observation window, two sets of simulated tape gear light strips, multi-function playback buttons, dual headphone listening devices, built-in audio playback control system, lockable USB audio source replacement interface, and two floor-standing support columns. After wearing headphones, visitors press the central control button to play nostalgic audio, and the gear light strips flash synchronously with the music, intuitively replicating the working form of old-fashioned tape players, popularizing knowledge of analog audio storage and electroacoustic conversion, supporting simultaneous experience for two people, and combining science popularization with nostalgic immersive experience effects. ★Scientific Principle: The exhibit relies on the principles of electroacoustic conversion and digital audio storage. The built-in audio motherboard reads the stored audio source, converts digital audio signals into electrical signals transmitted to the headphones for sound production, restoring sound wave vibrations; the simulated tape gears with synchronously flashing light strips change in sync with the audio rhythm, simulating the visual effect of old tape reel rotation. The device is equipped with a timed sleep program, automatically cutting off power for energy saving after long periods of inactivity; a reserved lockable USB interface allows convenient updating of internal audio materials, fully demonstrating the technological evolution of audio from analog tape storage to modern digital storage.
