Stereophonic Sound

Acoustics

★Exhibit Content: Binaural auditory localization, two-channel stereo, acoustic phase difference science popularization manual interactive experience ★Interaction: Two people cooperate to tap the pipe, single-ear and binaural listening comparison interaction ★Operation: 1. Sit on the matching adjustable seat, aim both ears at the earpieces at the two ends of the pipe; ask a companion to tap the pipe wall at different positions on the outside of the ring-shaped pipe, and rely on hearing to judge the direction of the tapping sound source; 2. Use two methods respectively—listening with both ears simultaneously and listening with one ear alone—compare the difference in accuracy of identifying the sound source position under the two modes, and summarize the advantages of binaural localization. ★Exhibit Description: "Stereo" is a circular floor-standing science popularization exhibit on the special topic of acoustic hearing, belonging to the acoustic and human ear physiological perception exhibition area, and a recommended exhibit of the PopsciCat exhibit mall. The exhibit uses an arc-shaped black metal bracket with a ring-shaped wooden tabletop. A yellow ring-shaped sound-transmitting hose is mounted on the tabletop, with listening earpieces reserved at both ends of the hose; it is equipped with an adjustable red cushioned swivel seat, a blue circular acrylic science popularization instruction sign hangs on the side of the cabinet, and tapping mallets are provided on both sides. The exhibit simulates the sound propagation path through the ring-shaped sound-transmitting pipe, allowing visitors to intuitively compare the directional discrimination effect of single-ear and binaural listening, and concretely explain the acoustic principles by which binaural time difference, sound level difference, and phase difference form stereo directional perception. ★Scientific Principle: The core of stereo is the principle of two-channel binaural localization: 1. When the sound source deviates from the central axis of the human ears, there is a difference in the propagation distance of sound to the left ear and right ear, causing slight differences in arrival time, loudness, and phase of the sound received by the two ears; 2. After the human ear captures this difference, it transmits it to the brain. The brain combines past auditory experience to analyze the difference and accurately determine the spatial direction of the sound source; 3. When listening with only one ear, there is no comparison difference between the two sets of sounds, so it is impossible to accurately distinguish the front-back and left-right directions of the sound source. The localization effect is far weaker than listening with both ears simultaneously. This is also the underlying acoustic logic for stereo audio-visual equipment being equipped with two-channel and multi-channel
