Feel the Lift

Aerospace

★Exhibit Content: Bernoulli's Principle ★Interaction: Mechanical Interaction ★Operation: 1. Press the button on the console to start the fan; 2. Wear different wings between the air outlet and the air inlet to feel the changes. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a display stand, an annular wind tunnel duct, a fan, multiple sets of wing models, and an electronic control system. It is a recommended exhibit from the PopsciCat Exhibit Store. The exhibit integrates a closed annular wind tunnel structure. After the fan operates, a stable and uniform continuous airflow is generated inside the duct. Participants can select various wing models with different cross-sectional shapes from the side storage bucket, put them on their arms, place the wings between the air outlet and the air inlet of the wind tunnel, slightly adjust the tilt angle of the wings, press the start button, and personally feel the upward lifting force generated by the airflow acting on the wings. By replacing wing models with different curvatures and airfoil shapes, participants can compare and observe the differences in lift magnitude, and intuitively understand the basic physical principle of aircraft takeoff. ★Scientific Principle: When airflow with a certain speed flows over the wing surface, the streamlined cross-sectional structure of the wing makes the airflow path on the upper surface longer, causing the airflow speed to be faster than that on the lower surface. According to the principle of continuity of airflow and Bernoulli's principle, the higher the fluid velocity, the lower the pressure. Therefore, the pressure above the wing is lower than the pressure below the wing. The pressure difference between the upper and lower surfaces of the wing creates an upward pressure difference, and this upward pressure is the lift given by the air to the wing. The magnitude of lift varies with airflow speed, angle of attack, and airfoil profile, which is also the core principle for aircraft to overcome their own gravity and fly into the sky.
