Shape and Drag
★Exhibit Content: Popular science on the relationship between air resistance and object shape, frontal area ★Interaction: Electromechanical interactive experience ★Operation: Press the button to start three groups of rotating devices of different shapes, compare the stopping time of spherical, cylindrical, and conical objects under the same initial speed, and intuitively observe which shape experiences the least air resistance. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a display stand, three groups of rotating devices of different shapes (spherical, cylindrical, conical), a start button, drive motors, and a protective cover. Participants press the button to start the devices, and the three objects rotate at the same initial speed. By comparing the stopping times, they intuitively understand the relationship between air resistance and object shape and frontal area, transforming abstract aerodynamic principles into an operable and fun interaction, suitable for aerospace science museums and primary/secondary school science education scenarios. ★Scientific Principle: This exhibit is based on the principle of air resistance: Air resistance refers to the obstructive force of air on moving objects. Its magnitude is proportional to the square of the object's speed and its frontal area. The faster the speed and the larger the frontal area, the greater the resistance. Objects of different shapes show significant differences in air resistance: streamlined objects (such as conical and spherical) have a small frontal area and weak airflow interference, thus experiencing less air resistance, so they stop later under the same initial speed. Through comparative experiments with three shapes, the exhibit intuitively reveals the relationship between air resistance and object shape, helping visitors understand the scientific basis of streamlined design in the aerospace field.
