Foucault Pendulum

Aerospace

★Exhibit Content: Earth's rotation phenomenon, law of inertia ★Interaction: Electromechanical interaction ★Operation: This exhibit is operated and demonstrated by museum staff; after opening, staff will lift the metal ball to the edge position and release it. Visitors stand outside the guardrail and watch the Foucault pendulum's motion trajectory and the corresponding light changes; visitors can also learn about Earth's rotation and related knowledge through the instruction board. ★Exhibit Description: The main body of the exhibit consists of a large Foucault pendulum demonstration device, a light-guided base platform, an auxiliary transmission structure, protective railings, and an illustrated text board. It is a recommended exhibit from the PopsciCat Exhibit Store. The large Foucault pendulum model is suspended from a top steel structure supported by three stainless steel standpipes. Below the Foucault pendulum is a circular platform, which contains LED light strips and an electromagnetic transmission system inside. A black safety protective railing is set around the platform to ensure visitor safety. When the pendulum ball swings, the platform lights synchronously mark changes in the swing direction, continuously recording the entire process of the slow deflection of the pendulum plane, making it convenient for visitors to continuously observe and compare. ★Scientific Principle: The pendulum is not subjected to external forces in the direction of its swing plane. According to the law of inertia, the spatial direction of the swing will not change. Therefore, it can be seen that this change in swing direction is due to the counterclockwise rotation of the Earth where the observer is located. Observers on Earth see the relative motion phenomenon, which powerfully proves that the Earth is rotating. At different latitudes, the deflection rate of the Foucault pendulum's swing plane also differs. The higher the latitude, the faster the deflection speed; at the equator, there is almost no deflection. This exhibit can intuitively present the wonderful effect of this relative motion, helping visitors understand the visual changes brought about by the reference frame.
