Transit Method - Finding Unknown Planets
★Exhibit Content: By manually adjusting the knob to simulate the transit observation process, intuitively understand the scientific method of detecting exoplanets using the transit method. ★Interaction: Electromechanical interaction ★Operation: 1. Turn the exhibit knob to make the planet model rotate along its orbit; 2. Observe the change in the star's brightness as the planet passes in front of the star; 3. Read the instruction panel to learn about the transit method. ★Exhibit Description: This exhibit is a desktop electromechanical interactive exhibit. Inside the base, there is a luminous star model and a planetary orbital motion mechanism. On top, there is a hemispherical high-transparency acrylic protective cover. The tabletop is equipped with an adjustment knob and an illustrated instruction panel. It is a recommended exhibit from the PopsciCat Exhibit Store. Visitors turn the adjustment knob to drive the planet model along its orbit, simulating the transit phenomenon of a planet passing in front of a star, and observe the change in brightness of the simulated star light source, intuitively reproducing the complete process of detecting exoplanets using the transit method. ★Scientific Principle: The transit method is the most commonly used detection technique for finding exoplanets, and its principle is similar to a solar eclipse. When a planet passes in front of a star, it blocks part of the starlight, causing a periodic decrease in the observed brightness of the star. Scientists can determine the existence of an exoplanet by capturing this brightness change. In addition to the transit method, there are other techniques such as astrometry, radial velocity, direct imaging, and microlensing that can detect exoplanets.
