Tug-of-War

Children's Playground

★Exhibit Content: Pulley System ★Interaction: Mechanical Interaction ★Operation: Participants on both sides each hold a rope for a tug-of-war. Try adjusting the positions of both sides to explore how the results differ. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of pulleys, ropes, a base, and a protective cover. Through interactive experience, it demonstrates the principle that a movable pulley can save effort. ★Scientific Principle: A movable pulley is a simple mechanical device mainly used to change the direction of force and reduce the force required to lift a heavy object. Its scientific principle is mainly based on the lever principle and the law of conservation of energy. A movable pulley can be regarded as a lever, where the fulcrum (axle) of the pulley serves as the fulcrum of the lever, and the contact point of the rope on the pulley serves as the force arm. When force is applied to the rope, because the pulley's axle can move, it effectively distributes the force to different parts of the rope, thereby reducing the force required to lift the heavy object. Ideally, the force required to lift a heavy object using a movable pulley is half the weight of the object, because the force arm (the radius of the pulley) is twice the distance from the point where the object's weight acts to the fulcrum.
