Fun Turntable
★Exhibit Content: Coriolis force, inertia, centrifugal force ★Interaction: Electromechanical interaction ★Operation: Press the button. Once the rotating platform starts spinning, pick up the ring and place it on the track. Adjust the direction and release the ring, then observe the motion of the ring on the disc. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a rotating platform, a small ring, and a small ball. After the participant presses the switch button, the rotating platform will continuously spin. The rotation of the platform affects the path of the ring moving on its surface. The speed at the outer edge is faster than near the center, so the movement of the rings placed at different positions on the platform will vary. The participant presses the button, and once the rotating platform starts spinning, picks up the ring and places it on the track. After adjusting the direction, releases the ring, and observes the motion of the ring on the disc. ★Scientific Principle: For an object in circular motion, due to its own inertia, it always tends to fly off along the tangent direction of the circle. When the net external force suddenly disappears or is insufficient to provide the centripetal force required for circular motion, the object will move gradually away from the center (when the net external force is 0, the object maintains its original velocity and moves in a straight line at constant speed). This phenomenon is called the centrifugal phenomenon. The reason the object does not fly out is that the centripetal force continuously pulls the object onto the circular path, keeping the distance from the center constant. Once the centripetal force suddenly disappears, the object flies off along the tangent direction, moving farther and farther from the center.
