Catapult Ball

Children's Playground

★Exhibit Content: Gas Pressure ★Interaction: Mechanical Interaction ★Operation: Visitors pull the rope to lift the large ball into the large tube; release the rope and watch how the small ball shoots into the air. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit features two connected acrylic tubes, one thick and one narrow. In the thick tube, there is a ball that can be pulled up and down, and in the narrow tube, there is a lightweight small ball. The narrow tube is equipped with a funnel-shaped protective net and a layer of blocking net. During participation, the participant pulls the rope to lift the ball in the thick tube to a high position. Upon releasing the rope, the ball falls rapidly, causing the air pressure inside the tube to increase instantly. The air is forced into the narrow tube, pushing the small ball upward, and the small ball shoots up. When the small ball hits the blocking net, it falls back into the narrow tube along the funnel-shaped protective net. ★Scientific Principle: According to the ideal gas law, when temperature remains constant, pressure is inversely proportional to gas volume; the smaller the gas volume, the greater the pressure. In this exhibit, when we release the rope and the disc at the top falls rapidly, the air pressure in the thick tube increases instantly. The air is forced into the narrow tube, pushing the small ball upward, and the small ball shoots up. When the small ball hits the blocking net, it falls back into the narrow tube along the funnel-shaped protective net.
