Thrust of an Aircraft Propeller
★Exhibit Content: Newton's Third Law ★Interaction: Mechanical Interaction ★Operation: Sit on the seat, grip the armrests with both hands, and pedal to experience the sensation of a rotating "carousel". ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of guardrails, a propeller device, a braking device, and an instruction sign. When participating, visitors enter the exhibit and, under the guidance of the attendant, sit on the seat, grip the handles with both hands, and pedal. The propeller is driven to rotate slowly, generating an airflow that provides a backward reaction force (i.e., the propeller's thrust), causing the propeller device to rotate under this force. By pedaling faster, visitors can also experience the thrill of circular motion! ★Scientific Principle: The exhibit mainly demonstrates the principles and knowledge of Newton's Third Law (action and reaction). The action and reaction forces between two interacting objects are always equal in magnitude, opposite in direction, and act along the same straight line. This scientific principle is Newton's Third Law. The propeller blades rotate in the air, continuously pushing air backward, and the air gives the blades a forward thrust, causing the device to rotate. Newton's Third Law is widely applied in production and daily life, such as helicopters hovering and moving forward in the air, ships sailing, and rowing boats.
