Hydrogen-Oxygen Separation

Earth & Home

★Exhibit Content: Hydrogen-oxygen separation, Newton's third law ★Interaction: Electromechanical interaction ★Operation: 1. Press the start button, the system begins electrolysis of water; 2. Press the launch button, the exhibit performs a voice countdown, generates an electric spark to ignite the mixed gas and propel the rocket to launch. ★Exhibit Description: This exhibit is a hydrogen rocket launch device. Participants use a hand-cranked generator to produce electric current for electrolysis of water; the hydrogen and oxygen produced by electrolysis are mixed and released into a closed space; touching the spark plug generates an electric spark, igniting the mixed gas, thereby propelling the rocket upward. ★Scientific Principle: 1. Principle of continuous flight in space: In the atmosphere, flight can be explained based on Newton's action and reaction theory, that is, by ejecting gas backward, the gas pushes the air backward, and the air will push the flight forward with the same reaction force. When ejecting, it is equivalent to applying a reverse thrust to the gas. According to Newton's law, the ejected gas will generate a reaction force through the action point, thereby propelling forward flight. This physical process is independent of air, so even in the vacuum of space, it will still fly at high speed. 2. Model flight principle: Introduce the structure that uses hydrogen explosion thrust to generate thrust from the model. Electrolysis of water: The process of electrolyzing water (H2O) with direct current to produce hydrogen and oxygen is called electrolysis of water. When electric current passes through water (H2O), hydrogen gas (H2) is formed by reduction of water at the cathode, and oxygen gas (O2) is formed by oxidation of water at the anode. The amount of hydrogen produced is about twice that of oxygen. Electrolysis of water is a next-generation hydrogen fuel production method that can replace steam reforming to produce oxygen.
