Thermoelectric Generation

Earth & Home

★Exhibit Content: Thermoelectric effect (Seebeck effect) energy conversion ★Interaction: Electromechanical interaction ★Operation: 1. Place your palm on the palm sensing area and observe the change in the ammeter pointer and the movement of the cartoon model; 2. Press the button to start the heater and again observe the change in the ammeter pointer and the movement of the cartoon model. ★Exhibit Description: This exhibit mainly consists of a palm temperature sensing component, an electric heating source module, a thermoelectric power generation plate, a detection ammeter, a cartoon demonstration model, a transparent protective cover, and an operation cabinet. It is a recommended exhibit from the PopsciCat Exhibit Store. Visitors press their palm on the palm sensing area, using the temperature difference between the human palm and the ambient temperature to drive the thermoelectric power generation plate to produce a weak electric current, causing the ammeter pointer to deflect and the cartoon model to move; pressing the button starts the electric heating source, increasing the temperature difference between the hot and cold ends, and the output electric energy increases accordingly. The deflection amplitude of the ammeter pointer and the movement state of the model will change significantly. The exhibit transforms the invisible thermoelectric conversion phenomenon into visual instrument readings and mechanical motion, intuitively demonstrating the Seebeck effect and helping visitors understand the physical process of direct conversion of thermal energy into electrical energy. ★Scientific Principle: Thermoelectric power generation is based on the Seebeck effect. When two different metals or semiconductors are connected at both ends to form a closed loop, and there is a temperature difference between the two junctions, an electromotive force is generated within the loop, thereby creating a loop current. In this exhibit, the palm or heater serves as the hot end, and the environment as the cold end. When a temperature difference is created across the semiconductor thermoelectric power generation plate, electrical energy is output. The greater the temperature difference, the higher the electromotive force generated, and the greater the loop current, resulting in more significant deflection of the ammeter pointer and movement of the model, intuitively demonstrating the law of thermoelectric energy conversion.
