Nuclear Ping-Pong (Chain Reaction)

Earth & Home

★Exhibit Content: Chain reaction, nuclear energy ★Interaction: Electromechanical interaction ★Operation: Press the start button and observe how the ping-pong balls inside continuously collide with each other. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit mainly consists of a display stand, small balls, a pneumatic trigger platform, a protective cover, a pneumatic trigger mechanism, a reset mechanism, an air compressor, solenoid valves, etc. The pneumatic platform is evenly distributed with holes, grouped in threes, each hole corresponding to a small ball. The small balls represent neutrons. When the platform operates, the balls are blown up by airflow. The balls touch other balls, causing a chain reaction through the pneumatic mechanism, continuously making the balls collide with each other. After the demonstration, the pneumatic platform automatically resets the balls back to their holes. ★Scientific Principle: Through this exhibit, a chain reaction can be observed. A chain reaction arises from a reaction and its subsequent reactions. In a chain reaction, positive feedback continuously reinforces the reaction. Fission is when a very massive atomic nucleus absorbs a neutron and splits into two or more lighter nuclei, releasing two to three neutrons and a large amount of energy, which can then cause other nuclei to undergo fission, sustaining the process. This process is called a chain reaction.
