Pumped Storage

Earth & Home

★Exhibit Content: Pumped Storage ★Interaction: Mechanical Interaction ★Operation: Pull the handle back and forth to make water flow to the top tank, and observe the power generation phenomenon when the water falls. ★Exhibit Description: Through fun water-pressing interaction, the exhibit helps visitors understand the principle of pumped storage. The main body of the exhibit is a pumped storage device, which mainly consists of a water-pressing structure, water turbine, power meter, water storage tank, and light bulb. The exhibit allows two people to interact simultaneously. Participants drive a piston via the handle to lift water from the bottom to the top. When the water level in the top tank reaches the warning line, the water in the tank flows down, driving the runner inside the acrylic cover. At this time, visitors can see the light bulb in front light up. ★Scientific Principle: Pumped storage power stations can resolve the supply-demand contradiction between peak and off-peak periods of the power grid, and are a way of indirectly storing electrical energy. A pumped storage unit consists of a reversible pump-turbine and a motor-generator set. During the low load period of the power system at midnight, the reversible pump-turbine uses surplus electrical energy from the power system to pump water from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir, converting electrical energy into potential energy and storing this water in the form of potential energy. When the power system experiences peak load overload, the gates are opened to release the water stored in the upstream reservoir, and the generator set is used to generate electricity, supplementing the power deficit of the generation system during peak periods and meeting the peak-shaving needs of the power system.
