Turbulence

Earth & Home

★Exhibit Content: Popular science on the principles of laminar and turbulent flow in fluid mechanics ★Interaction: Mechanical + multimedia interaction ★Operation: Visitors drive a spherical or flat container to rotate via a handle, observe the flow state changes of the internal suspension, and simultaneously watch a popular science video on turbulence principles on the screen. ★Exhibit Description: This exhibit focuses on fluid mechanics. Through dual demonstration devices—spherical and flat—it transforms abstract fluid motion into a visible dynamic visual spectacle. Visitors manually rotate the handle to drive the custom suspension inside the container at high speed, intuitively observing the transition from laminar to turbulent flow, as well as the chaotic form of irregular motion of microscopic particles. At the same time, they learn about the formation mechanism and scientific principles of turbulence through synchronized multimedia. It is suitable for science popularization displays in science and technology museums, youth activity centers, and physics science exhibition areas. ★Scientific Principle: When the fluid flow velocity is low, the fluid layers do not interfere with each other, exhibiting regular layered flow (laminar flow); when the flow velocity exceeds a critical value, the fluid motion becomes chaotic, with vortices, mixing, and energy dissipation (turbulent flow). Changes in rotational speed correspond to changes in the Reynolds number, intuitively demonstrating the decisive influence of the Reynolds number on fluid flow states. The exhibit consists of two core demonstration modules and an interactive system: Dual-mode demonstration containers: 1. Spherical container: filled with custom organic solvent and water-soluble pigment; when rotated, it can simulate fluid vortices and turbulent structures in three-dimensional space. 2. Flat container: displays the layering, mixing, and instability processes of fluid under shear force in a two-dimensional plane, facilitating observation of flow state evolution.
