Wind and Terrain
★Exhibit Content: The effect of wind on landform formation ★Interaction: Electromechanical interaction ★Operation: 1. Press the start button, and the blower blows air toward the sandbox scene; 2. Rotate the air outlet to change the wind direction, and observe the changes in landforms such as dunes and sand ridges formed by the movement of sand grains. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of an interactive platform, a miniature sandbox scene, a blower device, and an interactive handle. A glass cover is set on the platform, inside which a small natural sand environment is created. A blower device is installed at the bottom side of the glass cover. Participants can start the blower to blow air toward the sandbox scene, and the sand grains in the sandbox will move and change under the wind, simulating the formation of dunes, sand ridges, and other landforms. Participants can also rotate the air outlet to change the direction of the wind blowing on the sand, and observe the impact of wind on natural landforms. ★Scientific Principle: Wind is one of the important external forces shaping the surface morphology. When wind blows over sandy land, it causes erosion, transportation, and deposition of sand particles: the greater the wind speed, the stronger the transport capacity, and sand particles move with the wind; when the wind speed decreases or encounters obstacles, sand particles deposit and gradually form dunes, sand ridges, and other landforms. Changes in wind direction also affect the morphology of landforms. Under long-term directional wind, sand ridges or crescent-shaped dunes with specific orientations are formed.
