Charged Hair (Static Electricity)

Electromagnetism

★Exhibit Content: Static Electricity ★Interaction: Electromechanical Interaction ★Operation: Participants stand on the insulating platform and place their hands on the high-voltage static electricity ball. When the staff presses the power switch, participants standing on the insulating platform will be seen with their hair standing up due to electrostatic repulsion, showing a 'hair standing on end' scene. (Note: 1. The entire experience must be conducted under staff guidance; it is strictly forbidden to turn on the exhibit without authorization. 2. During the experience, after removing your hand from the ball, do not touch the ball again to prevent electric shock.) ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit mainly consists of a high-voltage static electricity generator, a high-voltage static electricity ball, and a specially made insulating platform. This exhibit demonstrates the characteristics of electrostatic equilibrium of insulated conductors, namely Van de Graaff static electricity. The high-voltage power supply transfers charge to the spherical shell through corona discharge. Utilizing the electrostatic equilibrium of insulated conductors, the charge distributes on the outer surface of the spherical shell. As charge accumulates, the potential on the spherical shell gradually rises to a dynamic equilibrium of 200,000–300,000 volts. When visitors place their hands on the spherical shell, their potential rises simultaneously with the shell. Because hair has weak conductivity, some charge transfers to the hair, and under electrostatic repulsion, the hair stands up. ★Scientific Principle: Static electricity is a stationary charge or non-flowing charge (flowing charge forms an electric current). When charge accumulates on an object or surface, static electricity is formed. Charge is divided into positive and negative charges, meaning static electricity phenomena are also divided into two types: positive static electricity and negative static electricity. ★Staff Operation Instructions: 1. Effectively discharge by contacting the metal ball with a discharge rod; 2. Guide participants to stand properly and hold the metal ball steadily with one hand; 3. Set the lockable switch to the 'ON' position; 4. Set the lockable switch to the 'OFF' position.
