Corona Discharge

Electromagnetism

★Exhibit Content: Tip discharge phenomenon, high-voltage electric field characteristics ★Interaction: Electromechanical interaction ★Operation: Press the "Start" button and observe the discharge phenomenon at the tip of the metal rod. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of needle-shaped metal electrodes, a high-voltage generator, a button, and a protective cover. Two metal electrodes stand on the exhibit platform, one connected to positive and one to negative. Press the start button to energize, then one metal electrode begins to rotate. When the sharp needles on the two electrodes approach each other, a strong tip discharge phenomenon occurs. There is an angle between the sharp needles, so during rotation, continuous tip discharge can be generated between the two electrodes. ★Scientific Principle: Under the action of a strong electric field, areas with large surface curvature (such as the tips of sharp, small objects) have dense equipotential surfaces, and the electric field strength increases sharply, causing the nearby air to be ionized and produce gas discharge. This phenomenon is called corona discharge. Tip discharge is a type of corona discharge, specifically referring to the phenomenon of gas discharge caused by air ionization near the tip. Therefore, to observe the tip discharge phenomenon, in addition to sufficient high voltage, an appropriate shape match is also necessary to make it easy to achieve. The charge carried by a charged metal conductor is most dense at sharp parts. When the tips of two charged conductors carry dense opposite charges and are very close to each other, the high voltage formed between the tips will ionize the air between them, producing discharge sparks and a "crackling" sound. This is the principle of tip discharge.
