Static Rolling Ball

Electromagnetism

★Exhibit Content: Electrostatic Phenomena ★Interaction: Electromechanical Interaction ★Operation: Press the start button and observe the movement of the small balls. Function Overview: This exhibit mainly consists of electrodes and metal balls, demonstrating the principles of static electricity. The central sphere of the exhibit is a negatively charged electrostatic electrode. The foam balls wrapped with metal bands are polarized under the electrostatic field of the central electrode: the side facing the central electrode becomes positively charged, while the opposite side becomes negatively charged, but the total charge of the entire sphere remains neutral. Since the positively charged side faces the central electrode, under the effect of opposite charges attracting, it moves toward the central electrode. After touching the electrode, it becomes assimilated with the same charge. The balls with the same charge are then repelled away from the central electrode due to electrostatic repulsion and move outward; upon touching the outer grounded ring, the charge is released, and the balls return to their initial state, repeating the previous motion. ★Scientific Principle: Static electricity is the situation where charges are stationary and the corresponding electromagnetic field quantities do not change with time, an important special case in electromagnetism. After pressing the button to energize the exhibit, the balls on the platform will continuously roll around because the central sphere is the positive electrode and the stainless steel ring around the disc is the negative electrode. After energization, both the balls and the central electrode are positively charged, so under the repulsive force of like charges, the balls are repelled from the central electrode; when the balls contact the stainless steel ring around the disc, the positive charge on the balls neutralizes with the negative charge, and then they become negatively charged, so they are attracted back to the positively charged central electrode. This back-and-forth motion creates the interesting electrostatic rolling balls. Applications of static electricity include electrostatic dust removal, electrostatic spraying, electrostatic flocking, electrostatic copying, air purification, etc.
