Hand Battery
★Exhibit Content: Principle of primary battery, conductivity of conductors ★Interaction: Mechanical interaction ★Operation: 1. Grip the metal rods of different materials on both sides with both hands; 2. Observe the deflection change of the ammeter pointer; 3. Compare the difference in current magnitude generated by different metal combinations. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of iron rods, copper rods, aluminum rods, an ammeter, a protective casing, etc. Participants grip any one metal rod on each side with both hands and observe the change of the galvanometer pointer, demonstrating knowledge about several conductive materials and the human body being a conductor. The metal rods are divided into two groups, each with three metal rods: iron, copper, and aluminum. The exhibit adopts an interactive and comparative approach. When both hands touch one metal plate each, a primary battery is formed, and a sensitive galvanometer is used to test the current. When current passes through the ammeter, the galvanometer pointer moves; the stronger the current, the greater the pointer deflection. Thus, through interaction, visitors understand the principle of current generation by palm sweat and the reasons for the differences in current magnitude generated by iron, aluminum, and copper rods. ★Scientific Principle: When two different metals (with different electrode potentials) are connected through an electrolyte solution (such as sweat), a redox reaction occurs to form a primary battery, and electrons move directionally through the external circuit to form an electric current. The greater the electrode potential difference between different metals, the stronger the current generated. This exhibit visually presents the current differences among different metal combinations through the deflection amplitude of the galvanometer pointer, helping to understand the working mechanism of a primary battery.

★Exhibit Content: Human body electrochemical reaction, Voltaic battery ★Interaction: Mechanical interaction ★Operation: 1. Participants touch the copper, aluminum, and iron hand-shaped electrodes; 2. Watch the change in ammeter readings. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of an ammeter, metal hand device, and background board. Several different metal materials are designed and connected to both sides of the ammeter. When visitors touch the metal hands with slightly sweaty moist hands, an electrochemical reaction occurs, generating a small current. When both hands do not touch the metal hands, no current is generated, and the ammeter displays 0. Through the electromechanical interactive presentation, visitors understand scientific knowledge such as human body electrochemical reactions during the interactive experience of touching different metal materials. A battery formed by inserting different metal plates into an electrolyte aqueous solution is commonly called a Voltaic battery. Because zinc has stronger reducing properties than copper, in the battery, zinc is more likely to lose electrons and acts as the negative electrode. Cations gain electrons on the copper surface, so the copper plate acts as the positive electrode. In fact, the principle of a primary battery is a spontaneous redox reaction. ★Scientific Principle: The three metal plate materials in this exhibit are copper and aluminum, copper and carbon steel, and copper and pure iron. By using multiple comparison groups, visitors understand the chemical activity of different metals and the differences in current magnitude generated, demonstrating the working principle of a hand battery. In this exhibit, the human body generates current because the hands touch metals with different properties on the device. Taking a hand battery made of aluminum and copper plates as an example, because hands carry a small amount of salt solution, aluminum reacts with chloride ions in the solution to form aluminum trichloride, losing electrons. The electrons remain on the aluminum plate. When the copper and aluminum plates are connected by a wire, the current on the aluminum plate flows to the copper plate, and current flows in the circuit. The hand on the copper plate also carries the same solution, and hydrogen ions in it take electrons from the copper plate to become hydrogen gas and are released. As long as this reaction continues, current will flow in the circuit. Thus, the human hand becomes part of the battery. When the copper and aluminum plates are connected by a wire, electrons on the aluminum plate move through the galvanometer to the copper plate, and electrons move directionally in the wire, generating current. This actually constitutes a simple primary battery. The hand battery and the Voltaic battery have the same principle; both are chemical batteries. The chemical batteries we use now, such as lithium batteries, button batteries, and dry batteries, are all based on principles similar to the Voltaic battery.
