Electromagnetic Stage

Electromagnetism

★Exhibit Content: High-voltage discharge phenomenon ★Interaction: Electromechanical interaction ★Operation: Watch or participate in the exhibit interaction under the guidance and explanation of the docent. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit features a set of discharge devices. By demonstrating the discharge process, visitors can intuitively feel the impact of high-voltage discharge, which helps them understand the discharge process and its principles. The exhibit is set up inside an enclosed wire mesh and includes a Faraday cage, a hair-raising static generator, a Jacob's ladder, and a Tesla discharge device. The system activates each device according to a preset sequence. During the Tesla discharge demonstration, you will experience the scene of lightning and thunder in the sky during natural thunderstorms. ★Scientific Principle: Hair-raising static generator: Electrostatic induction occurs when a charged object approaches an uncharged conductor. Due to the interaction between charges, the charges inside the conductor redistribute: opposite charges are attracted near the charged object, while like charges are repelled to the far end of the conductor. In this exhibit, by reaching out and touching the high-voltage electrostatic sphere while standing on an insulated platform, under the influence of high voltage, the hair acquires like charges, creating a hair-raising effect. Faraday cage: It consists of a cage body, a high-voltage power supply, a voltage display, and a control unit. The cage is connected to the ground. Due to the electrostatic shielding principle, it effectively isolates the electric field and electromagnetic interference inside and outside the cage. When the high-voltage power supply delivers 100,000 volts DC high voltage to the discharge rod through a current-limiting resistor, and the tip of the discharge rod is 10 cm from the cage, a discharge spark appears. At this time, even if a person inside the cage places their hand on the cage wall, causing the discharge rod to discharge toward their finger, the person will not feel anything. Tesla discharge: The Tesla coil can generate over a million volts to ground through electromagnetic resonance and form a discharge. Since the generation and extinction of the arc are controlled by music waves, when the arc breaks through the air, it converts the music waveform into air vibrations, producing the magical effect of an arc playing music. The discharge target of this exhibit is a cage made of metal mesh (Faraday cage). According to the electrostatic shielding principle, visitors inside will not receive an electric shock. Jacob's ladder: This exhibit shows two horn-shaped electrodes connected to high voltage. Air is an insulator. When the voltage between the electrodes is high enough, the air at the narrow bottom part is broken down and becomes conductive, generating an arc. Air convection and the Lorentz force drive the arc upward. As the arc rises, the distance between the electrodes increases, and the resistance increases. When the voltage is insufficient to break down the long air gap, the arc extinguishes, and simultaneously a new breakdown occurs at the bottom, forming a repeated cycle of rising arcs.
