Eddy Current (Trapped Canyon)

Electromagnetism

★Exhibit Content: Electromagnetic Damping Effect ★Interaction: Mechanical Interaction ★Operation: 1. Pick up a disc and insert it through the slot at the top; 2. Observe the differences in damping phenomena among discs of different materials. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit mainly consists of a permanent magnet track, metal discs of different materials, and a display stand, demonstrating eddy current phenomena. Visitors insert metal discs of different materials and shapes and observe their falling speeds, thereby understanding the electromagnetic damping effect. ★Scientific Principle: Eddy currents were discovered by French physicist Foucault, also known as Foucault currents. When a metal plate moves in a magnetic field, eddy currents are generated, and the lower the resistivity of the metal, the larger the eddy currents. The larger the eddy currents, the stronger the electromagnetic field generated. When a conductor moves in a magnetic field, the induced current causes an Ampere force on the conductor, and the direction of the Ampere force always opposes the motion of the conductor. This phenomenon is called electromagnetic damping. In the same magnetic field, the better the conductor's conductivity, the stronger the electromagnetic damping, and the slower the falling speed.
