Wimshurst Machine

Electromagnetism

★Exhibit Content: Generation of electric charge ★Interaction: Mechanical interaction ★Operation: 1. Visitors hold the handle and turn the disc; 2. Observe the process of the electric generator producing electricity. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of an electrification disc coated with many pieces of aluminum foil, a discharge sphere, a Leyden jar, induction brushes, a pulley, collecting combs, connecting pieces, a display stand, a protective cover, etc., demonstrating the phenomenon of electrification. Visitors turn the disc to generate electricity and observe the capacitance of the capacitor (Leyden jar), thereby understanding the principle of charge generation and its applications. ★Scientific Principle: The Wimshurst machine has a compact structure, mainly composed of an excitation system, stator, rotor, base, and bearings. Its electricity generation is based on the principle of electromagnetic induction, that is, the interaction between a magnetic field and a conductor generates an electric current. Historically, electric generators have evolved from simple machines to electromagnetic induction. As a type of electromagnetic generator, the Wimshurst machine uses changes in the magnetic field to drive conductors to produce current, demonstrating the important application of electromagnetism in energy conversion. This process not only promoted the advancement of motor technology but also profoundly influenced the historical process of industrialization and electrification.
