The Magic Eddy Current

Electromagnetism

★Exhibit Content: The principle of eddy currents generated in metal under alternating current ★Interaction: Electromechanical interaction ★Operation: 1. Press the "Start" button to activate the electromagnetic device; 2. Observe the state changes of the aluminum rings inside the transparent cover; Intuitively experience the effect of the eddy current phenomenon. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a guide shaft, copper coil, aluminum rings, protective cover, etc. After the electromagnetic coil is energized, eddy currents are generated. The tin foil ring is a closed conductor. When the induction cooker operates, it correspondingly generates an induced current and also a magnetic field. The magnetic field of the tin foil ring repels the coil's magnetic field, and the repulsive force is greater than its own gravity, so it jumps. The main technical means of the exhibit is to arrange a pure iron rod, with the bottom of the iron rod inserted into the copper coil. Above the coil, three aluminum rings of different diameters (large ring enclosing small ring) are sleeved on the iron rod. After energization, due to electromagnetic induction, eddy currents are generated in the aluminum rings, thereby generating magnetic fields, causing the three magnetic rings to levitate at different heights. Through mechanical interaction, the exhibit allows visitors to understand the principle of eddy currents generated in metal under alternating current, and to comprehend the eddy current technology applications commonly used in daily life. ★Scientific Principle: When a conductor is in an alternating magnetic field, an induced current is generated due to electromagnetic induction. This current forms a closed loop inside the conductor, called an eddy current. The eddy current generates a magnetic field opposite to the original magnetic field, thereby exerting a repulsive force on the conductor. In this exhibit, the copper coil is energized to generate an alternating magnetic field, and eddy currents are generated in the aluminum rings, forming a reverse magnetic field. Under the repulsive force, they levitate, intuitively demonstrating the principle of the eddy current phenomenon.
