Magnetic Ring Discharge

Electromagnetism

★Exhibit Content: Principle of arc generation, effect of magnetic field on arc motion ★Interaction: Electromechanical interaction ★Operation: 1. Turn the handwheel to control the movement of the magnet between the inner and outer rings; 2. Observe the motion trajectory of the arc in the circular groove; 3. Intuitively feel the driving effect of the magnetic field on the arc. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of an outer shield, LED strip fixing ring, quartz glass cover, turntable, inner ring, outer ring, magnet, handwheel, voltage multiplier, etc. Through electromechanical interaction, participants can watch the wonderful magnetic ring discharge phenomenon. After the exhibit is started, high voltage is generated between the large and small rings, which breaks down the air to form an arc. The arc moves in a circle under the action of the rotating magnet. The main technical means of the exhibit are coaxially arranging a metal inner ring and a metal outer ring, connected to the positive and negative poles of the voltage multiplier respectively. The handwheel controls the movement of the magnet between the inner and outer rings. After the power is turned on, the magnet pushes the arc to move between the inner and outer arcs. ★Scientific Principle: When the voltage between two electrodes is high enough, the air is broken down to form an arc; the arc is essentially plasma, which is subjected to the Lorentz force in a magnetic field and moves perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field. In this exhibit, high voltage forms an arc between the inner and outer rings, and the magnetic field generated by the magnet pushes the arc to move along the circumference, intuitively demonstrating the formation of the arc and the principle of the magnetic field's force on charged particles.
