Photoelectric Effect

Electromagnetism

★Exhibit Content: Principle of the photoelectric effect, concepts of quantum physics ★Interaction: Electromechanical interactive demonstration ★Operation: 1. Turn on the ultraviolet light device and observe the tip discharge phenomenon on the zinc plate surface; 2. Intuitively understand the process in which electrons inside the zinc plate are excited and escape under ultraviolet irradiation to form a photocurrent; 3. Combined with the information board, learn about the scientific significance of Einstein's photoelectric effect theory. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of an ultraviolet light device, a zinc plate, a tip discharge device, and a transparent protective cover. When visitors turn on the ultraviolet light device, ultraviolet light irradiates the surface of the zinc plate; electrons inside the zinc plate absorb photon energy, are excited, and escape, forming a photocurrent. Through the tip discharge device, this microscopic process is converted into a visible discharge phenomenon. This exhibit transforms Einstein's Nobel Prize-winning photoelectric effect theory into an intuitive and operable experimental demonstration, helping the public understand the particle nature of light and the concept of energy quantization. ★Scientific Principle: The core educational content of the exhibit revolves around Einstein's photoelectric effect equation, combined with the scientific basis of quantum physics: 1. Photon excitation of electrons: When ultraviolet light irradiates the zinc plate, the photon energy hν is greater than the work function W0 of the zinc plate. Free electrons inside the zinc plate absorb the photon energy, are excited, and escape from the surface, forming photoelectrons. 2. Formation of photocurrent: The escaped photoelectrons move directionally under the action of the electric field, forming a photocurrent. 3. Tip discharge phenomenon: When the photocurrent passes through the tip discharge device, due to the large curvature of the tip and the high electric field strength, the air is ionized, producing a visible tip discharge (spark or arc), intuitively proving the existence of the current.
