Magnetic Damping
★Exhibit Content: Electromagnetic induction, Lenz's law, magnetic damping effect ★Interaction: Manual interaction ★Operation: 1. Lift any ring to the top of the magnetic column; 2. Release the ring and observe the difference in falling speed of different rings. ★Exhibit Description: This exhibit is a recommended exhibit from PopsciCat Exhibit Store. It consists of a triangular base platform, a triangular top bracket, 3 permanent magnetic columns, and multiple material comparison rings. The exhibit has an overall triangular frame structure with multiple permanent magnetic columns arranged vertically, and is equipped with plastic and different metal rings for visitors to conduct comparative experiments. Visitors place the ring on top of the magnetic column and release it, intuitively observing the significantly different falling speeds of various rings, clearly demonstrating the magnetic damping effect, and helping visitors understand the application of Lenz's law and electromagnetic induction in daily life. ★Scientific Principle: According to Lenz's law, when a closed conductor moves relative to a magnetic pole cutting through magnetic field lines, the magnetic flux inside the closed conductor changes, generating an induced current. The magnetic field generated by the induced current hinders the relative motion between the conductor and the magnetic pole. Plastic cylinders are not conductors and cannot generate induced currents, so their falling speed is close to free fall; different metal cylinders have differences in conductivity and structure, resulting in different magnitudes of induced currents and different magnetic damping resistance, so their falling speeds vary.
