Slow Descent
★Exhibit Content: Lenz's Law, conductor eddy current electromagnetic damping comparison science experience ★Interaction: Manual comparison demonstration ★Operation: Place the ring magnet on top of the corresponding cylinder and release it, observe the falling speed of the magnet, and compare the difference in falling speed of the magnet under cylinders of different materials. ★Exhibit Description: "Slow Fall" is an interactive exhibit for physics popularization of electromagnetic induction, belonging to the electromagnetic mechanics exhibition area, and is a recommended exhibit by KexMall. The exhibit uses a white and blue standard operation console, with multiple hollow cylinders of different materials arranged vertically on the tabletop, paired with matching ring magnets, including plastic, aluminum, stainless steel, copper, acrylic, and other material tubes. Visitors release the same magnet from the top of each cylinder and intuitively see the magnet fall slowly inside conductor tubes, while the magnet falls quickly in insulating plastic tubes, clearly comparing the strength of eddy current damping effects in conductive materials, and intuitively explaining Lenz's Law. ★Scientific Principle: The core principle of this exhibit is Lenz's Law. When the ring magnet falls through the conductor cylinder, the magnetic flux inside the conductor changes, inducing a closed eddy current; the eddy current generates a reverse magnetic field, creating an upward damping resistance on the falling magnet, hindering its fall. Copper, aluminum, and other highly conductive metals have significant eddy current effects, and the magnet falls very slowly; plastic is an insulator with no induced eddy currents, so the magnet falls rapidly under gravity alone. The better the conductivity, the more obvious the damping retardation effect.
