Who Determines the Baby's Sex

Life & Health

★Exhibit Content: Popular science on the scientific principle of sex determination by XY chromosomes ★Interaction: Mechanical interactive game + multimedia video ★Operation: Visitors turn the drum to simulate the combination process of X/Y chromosomes, and with the multimedia video, intuitively understand the scientific mechanism of sex determination. ★Exhibit Overview: This exhibit uses a mechanical interactive game and multimedia video to present knowledge about XY chromosomes and the reasons for having boys or girls. "Who actually determines whether a baby is a boy or a girl?" This is a long-standing and curiosity-filled topic in human society. From the ancient belief of "sour for boys, spicy for girls" to modern scientific understanding, people's understanding of the mechanism of sex determination has gone through a long process of exploration. Through the combination of a mechanical interactive game and multimedia video, this exhibit reveals in a lively and interesting way the scientific principle that XY chromosomes determine sex inheritance, helping visitors break down misconceptions from traditional beliefs, establish a correct understanding of life science, and understand the randomness of sex determination and the laws of natural balance. ★Scientific Principle: Human somatic cells have 46 chromosomes, of which 44 (22 pairs) are autosomes, and the other two play a decisive role in sexual development and are called sex chromosomes. It is currently known that humans have two types of sex chromosomes, X and Y. In females, the two sex chromosomes are completely identical in size and shape and are called X chromosomes. In males, one is the same as the X chromosome, while the other is much smaller and is called the Y chromosome. The most important significance of the Y chromosome is that it determines male sex; apart from this, it has no other more important role.
