The Strength of Bones

Life & Health

★Exhibit Content: Human bone mechanics, femoral load-bearing structure ★Interaction: Electromechanical interaction ★Operation: Continuously press the metal pressure handle on the tabletop, applying force from small to large; observe the side light strip rising synchronously in height, and simultaneously check the digital display showing the real-time pressure value borne by the femur; when the light strip turns red, it indicates that the femoral force has reached the upper limit, and combined with the value, understand the ultimate load-bearing capacity of human bones. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a blue-and-white contrasting long floor-standing operation console, three sets of transparent acrylic protective covers, simulated hip and femur bone models, a metal pressure press handle, LED linear light strips, a digital display module, pressure sensing components, a PLC electronic control system, and a science popularization sign. It is a recommended exhibit from the PopsciCat Exhibit Store. The exhibit belongs to the Life and Health Human Anatomy Science Popularization Exhibition Area. Visitors apply pressure by pressing the handle, and the device collects pressure signals and converts them into simulated femoral force data. With dual visualization means of light strips and digital display, it intuitively shows the high-strength mechanical performance brought by the honeycomb porous structure of the femur, quantitatively demonstrates the load-bearing limit of bones, and helps the audience understand the unique mechanical advantages of the mineral composite tissue of human bones. ★Scientific Principle: Human bones are hard supporting tissues composed of mineralized bone. Inside, they have a honeycomb-like three-dimensional hollow porous structure, which provides high compressive strength while being lightweight. The exhibit handle has a built-in high-precision pressure sensor. The pressure signal generated by pressing is transmitted to the main control system and converted into a simulated femoral force value. The linear light strip and digital display synchronously feedback the force changes, and the red light indicates the load-bearing safety threshold. By comparing different bone simulation models, one can intuitively understand that the long bones of the lower limbs bear most of the body weight, and the special internal structure is the mechanical basis for the human body to achieve weight-bearing and movement.
