Catenary Bridge

Mathematics

★Exhibit Content: Catenary ★Interaction: Mechanical Interaction ★Operation: 1. Arrange the arch-shaped building blocks according to the outline on the horizontal wooden board. After ensuring correct arrangement, slowly raise the board to a vertical position. 2. Remove the board, allowing the arch-shaped blocks to stand independently on the base following the catenary curve. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit mainly consists of a display stand, a catenary curve support, and arch-shaped building block assembly modules. Visitors can build a freestanding arch without support. During construction, the blocks can be arranged using the outline drawn on the horizontal wooden board. After arrangement, slowly raise the board to a vertical position. Then the board can be returned to a horizontal state, leaving the arch-shaped wooden stack standing alone on the base. This arch curve is called a catenary. ★Scientific Principle: The catenary is a common curve used in physics to describe a uniform, inextensible long chain suspended between two points, forming a downward-curving shape under uniform gravity, hence the name. Although the curved shape appears to be a quadratic parabola, in 1638 Galileo's 'Two New Sciences' proved that because the tension in the rope varies with the suspended weight, being minimal at the bottom and increasing with height, the shape formed is not a parabola. Later, in 1670, Hooke derived the mathematical properties of the catenary based on mechanics. In 1691, Leibniz, Huygens, and Johann Bernoulli further derived the mathematical model.
