Chaos Water Wheel
★Exhibit Content: Chaos Theory ★Interaction: Electromechanical Interaction ★Operation: Observe the motion of the waterwheel and think about chaotic phenomena. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a platform, waterwheel, funnel, water tank, and circulating water system. After turning on the power and pressing the switch, the water pump operates, water flows from the outlet into small buckets, and the waterwheel starts rotating. Observe the chaotic phenomena during the rotation: the direction is uncertain, and the rotation may reverse without repeating. ★Scientific Principle: This exhibit is based on the Lorenz waterwheel, demonstrating bifurcation phenomena in systems. The water trough above the waterwheel drives 12 buckets, all in the same plane; half of the buckets can cover the entire water spray area, while the central axis and support rods are set back in another plane. During operation, the buckets do not touch each other. As long as water continuously pours from above, the waterwheel rotates. However, the direction of rotation is uncertain, and the rotation process cannot reverse and does not repeat, so this waterwheel is fundamentally different from traditional waterwheels. Chaotic motion is a non-periodic, irreversible process that is sensitive to initial conditions; a tiny disturbance can produce unexpected results, and long-term behavior is unpredictable. Besides many predictable systems in the world, there are also many unpredictable systems, known as chaotic systems, such as weather systems and stock markets.
