Archimedes' Screw Pump
★Exhibit Content: Archimedean spiral, screw conveyor mechanical principle, ancient water conservancy machinery science popularization manual interactive experience ★Interaction: Manual rotation of handwheel for mechanical conveying observation interaction ★Operation: Rotate the handwheel on the outside of the exhibit to drive the internal spiral blades to rotate synchronously. Observe the colored balls in the bottom groove being gradually lifted from low to high along the spiral channel, intuitively understanding the working process of screw conveying and lifting materials. ★Exhibit Description: The "Archimedean screw pump" is a desktop science popularization exhibit that integrates mathematical curves and ancient engineering machinery. It belongs to the comprehensive exhibition area of mathematics + engineering mechanics and is a recommended exhibit of PopsciCat. The exhibit adopts a simple white sheet metal cabinet with a transparent fully visible acrylic protective cabin. Inside the cabin, there is a metal spiral blade conveying shaft, a bottom storage groove, and colored experimental balls. The outside of the cabinet is equipped with a damping handwheel drive wheel and acrylic science popularization instruction signs. Visitors manually turn the handwheel to drive the spiral structure, relying on the spiral blades to lift the balls in sections to achieve low-to-high transportation, intuitively replicating the spiral water lifting device invented by Archimedes in ancient Greece. At the same time, it visualizes the geometric trajectory of the Archimedean spiral, connecting mathematical curve theory with practical mechanical applications. ★Scientific Principle: 1. Mathematical definition (Archimedean spiral): A moving point P moves uniformly in a straight line along a ray, while the ray rotates uniformly around its endpoint. The trajectory of point P is the Archimedean spiral. The profile of the spiral blades in the exhibit strictly follows this curve design; 2. Mechanical conveying principle: When the spiral blades rotate, each blade forms a closed carrying interval. During rotation, the interval continuously rises, and the balls in the groove are lifted by the blades and move upward step by step, completing the lifting of low-level materials; this structure is the core prototype of modern screw pumps and screw conveyors, and was used for farmland water irrigation more than two thousand years ago.
