Marvelous Motion

Mathematics

★Exhibit Content: Science popularization experience of the motion characteristics of a hypocycloid (curtate cycloid) ★Interaction: Electromechanical interaction ★Operation: 1. Turn the handwheel and observe the motion trajectory of the successively lit light spots; 2. After the light spots go out, observe the internal structure of the exhibit and explore the principle of the hypocycloid. ★Exhibit Description: "Wonderful Motion" is an interactive exhibit for science popularization of mechanics and geometric trajectories, specially designed for physics science exhibition areas, and is also a recommended exhibit of KexMall. The exhibit demonstrates the characteristics of the hypocycloid through electromechanical interaction. The exhibit is set against the exhibition wall with a button to start the device. Visitors turn the handwheel, and the device begins the demonstration. Inside the disc on the inner surface of the device, 8 light spots appear successively. The circular light ring formed by the 8 light spots rolls along the inner edge of the disc. The motion trajectory of all light spots is a straight line passing through the center of the disc. These straight lines are the trajectories of the light spots as fixed points on the moving circle, i.e., the hypocycloid. After the light spots go out, the internal structure of the exhibit can be observed: a moving circle internally tangent to the disc. ★Scientific Principle: A hypocycloid is a special case of a cycloid. When a circle rolls along another circle in the same plane, the trajectory of a fixed point on the moving circle is a hypocycloid. In this exhibit, a small circle is internally tangent to a large circle with twice its diameter. When the small circle rolls inside the large circle, the trajectory of any point on the circumference of the small circle is a straight line. This is a special form of the hypocycloid. When the light ring rolls on a fixed circle with twice its diameter, each light spot on the light ring moves in a straight line, intuitively verifying the geometric properties of the hypocycloid.
