Parabola
★Exhibit Content: Centrifugal force, rotating liquid paraboloid, parabolic function mathematical physics interactive experience ★Interaction: Manual handwheel rotation mechanics observation interaction ★Operation: Turn the handwheels on both sides of the tabletop to drive the internal transparent container to rotate at a constant speed. Observe the deflection change of the blue liquid surface inside the container from horizontal to a parabolic curved surface, and compare the liquid surface morphology differences between two sets of different inner cylinder structures. ★Exhibit Description: "Parabola" is a dual-station desktop interactive exhibit for mechanics and analytic geometry science popularization, belonging to the comprehensive mechanics and mathematics exhibition area, and is a recommended exhibit of the PopsciCat Exhibit Store. The exhibit adopts a white and blue color scheme long standard science popularization operation console. Two sets of independent rotating mechanisms are symmetrically arranged on the left and right of the tabletop. Each set is equipped with a transparent outer protective cylinder, a built-in rotating inner cylinder containing blue liquid, and a manual rotating handwheel; an acrylic science popularization instruction plate is placed in the middle of the tabletop, and the cabinet below has storage and maintenance cabinet doors. Visitors turn the handwheel to drive the container to rotate. The liquid is affected by centrifugal force and climbs along the cylinder wall. The liquid surface forms a standard parabolic curved surface, intuitively presenting the mechanical morphology of rotating liquid, and at the same time corresponds to the parabolic function graph, combining centrifugal mechanics and quadratic curve mathematics knowledge for display. ★Scientific Principle: 1. Static state: The liquid is only subjected to gravity and the supporting force of the container, and the liquid surface remains a horizontal plane; 2. Rotating state: The liquid moves in a circle with the container, generating centrifugal inertial force. The liquid tends to be thrown outward, but is blocked by the cylinder wall and can only climb upward along the inner wall; the greater the rotation speed, the higher the edge liquid surface rises, and the center liquid surface sinks. The overall liquid surface forms a rotating paraboloid, and the cross-section of this curved surface is a standard parabola; 3. Combination of mechanics and mathematics: The paraboloid cross-section satisfies the quadratic function analytical expression. The exhibit intuitively proves that centrifugal motion can generate a parabolic curve, connecting the correlation between mechanical phenomena and analytic geometry.
