Klein Bottle

Mathematics

★Exhibit Content: Topological geometry, four-dimensional space topological surface science popularization static observation experience ★Interaction: Static model observation, spatial imagination and thinking interaction ★Operation: Carefully observe the stainless steel hollow Klein bottle three-dimensional model on the tabletop and the reduced transparent physical models on both sides, think about how a bird can fly directly from the outside to the inside of the container without passing through the bottle wall, and understand the topological surface characteristics without internal or external boundaries. ★Exhibit Description: "Klein Bottle" is a tabletop science popularization exhibit on topological geometry, belonging to the spatial geometry mathematics exhibition area, and is a recommended exhibit of PopsciCat. The exhibit uses a standard rectangular operation table in white and blue colors. In the center of the tabletop, a blue base supports a stainless steel hollow Klein bottle three-dimensional wireframe model. Two transparent small Klein bottle physical objects are symmetrically placed on the left and right. The tabletop is equipped with an acrylic science popularization instruction sign. The model in three-dimensional space is only a projection of the four-dimensional Klein bottle. By observing the hollow wireframe and transparent physical objects, visitors can intuitively understand the special topological structure of the surface without distinction between inside and outside, and expand their cognition of three-dimensional and four-dimensional space. ★Scientific Principle: 1. The Klein bottle was proposed by German mathematician Felix Klein in 1882 and belongs to a four-dimensional topological surface; a complete Klein bottle can only exist completely in four-dimensional and higher-dimensional spaces. The bottle mouth passes through the fourth dimension and seamlessly connects with the bottom of the bottle. The surface has no boundary, no distinction between inside and outside, and does not intersect itself. 2. In reality, three-dimensional space cannot replicate a complete Klein bottle. The exhibit's metal frame and transparent container are simplified three-dimensional projection models, and the surface appears to self-intersect visually; a normal three-dimensional container has two independent spaces, inside and outside. The Klein bottle surface is continuously interconnected, and objects can directly reach the "inside" from the "outside" without penetrating the wall. It is a classic representative model of topology.
