Shortest Distance Around the World
★Exhibit Content: Principles of Map Projection ★Interaction: Multimedia Interaction ★Operation: Select two identical locations on the globe and the map, use a string to measure the distance between the two locations separately, and compare whether the distances are the same? Are the cities passed through the same? ★Exhibit Description: Through interactive exhibits, visitors can understand the shortest path on a sphere, master the principle of the shortest path, and be able to think divergently to master methods for finding the shortest path on other geometric bodies. The exhibit consists of a globe model, a flat map, and a display stand. The globe model is horizontally fixed on the display stand, and city names are displayed on the globe model. Visitors select any destination on the globe model, then according to their judgment, straighten the string to determine the endpoint of the shortest path from that city to the starting point. Compare the routes passed through by the two areas on the flat map to see what differences there are. ★Scientific Principle: Map projection is the theory and method of using certain mathematical rules to convert the longitude and latitude lines of the Earth's surface onto a plane. Since the Earth is an irregular pear-shaped sphere slightly wider at the equator and slightly flattened at the poles, its surface is a non-developable curved surface, so any mathematical method used for this conversion will produce errors and distortions. To reduce errors according to different needs, various projection methods have been developed.
