Spin Faster and Faster

Force & Mechanics

★Exhibit Content: Moment of inertia, conservation of angular momentum ★Interaction: Mechanical interaction ★Operation: There is a turntable in the middle of the exhibit with two sliding blocks on it. Visitors can sit on the seat and turn the handle to start the turntable rotating. Loosen the handle and slide the blocks. When the blocks move toward the center, the rotation speed increases; otherwise, it decreases. Visitors can feel the change in speed. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a base platform, turntable, turntable drive mechanism, movable counterweights, and a fence. When visitors sit on the seat and rotate the central handwheel to make the turntable rotate, moving the counterweights allows them to personally feel the change between force and moment arm. ★Scientific Principle: The speed of rotation of an object is related to the distribution of mass relative to the axis of rotation. Sitting on a chair on a disc, turn the steering wheel; hold "weights" in both hands, extend your arms, or pull them to your chest. By extending or retracting your arms, you can spin fast or slow, as gracefully as a figure skater. When the system is not subjected to an external torque, the speed of rotation of an object is related to the distribution of mass relative to the axis of rotation. The farther the mass distribution is from the axis, the slower the rotation; the closer, the faster.
