Gyroscope Chair

Force & Mechanics

★Exhibit Content: Conservation of Angular Momentum ★Interaction: Mechanical Interaction ★Operation: ①Participants sit on the seat of the rotating platform; ②Rapidly spin the flywheel to drive the internal mechanical structure and make the entire platform start rotating; ③Change the rotation direction of the flywheel to experience the platform rotating in the opposite direction, thereby understanding the phenomenon of conservation of angular momentum. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit is a gyroscope consisting of a seat on a rotating platform, a manually rotatable flywheel, a joystick, and a protective cover. After the participant sits on the seat, they can manipulate the flywheel to change the direction of the gyroscope's rotation axis along the Y-axis. Due to the gyroscopic effect, the participant sitting on the seat will rotate along the Z-axis; if the participant manipulates the flywheel in the opposite direction to change the rotation axis along the Y-axis in the reverse direction, the participant sitting on the seat will rotate in the opposite direction along the Z-axis. ★Scientific Principle: The law of conservation of angular momentum is one of the universal laws of physics. It reflects the general law that for a particle or system of particles not subject to external forces or when the resultant moment of all external forces about a fixed point (or fixed axis) is always zero, the motion around that point (or axis) follows. For example, a particle moving in a central force field always experiences a central force passing through the force center. Since the moment of the central force about the force center is zero, according to the angular momentum theorem, the angular momentum of the particle about the force center is conserved. Therefore, the particle's trajectory is a plane curve, and the radius vector from the force center to the particle sweeps out equal areas in equal times.
