Magdeburg Hemispheres (Pull-Down Type)

Force & Mechanics

★Exhibit Content: Atmospheric Pressure ★Interaction: Electromechanical Interaction ★Operation: ①Large sphere part: Attach the hemispherical dome to the top, press the "Start" button, and the vacuum pump will evacuate the air inside the sphere; pull the handle downward with force to see if the hemispheres can be separated. ②Tabletop part: Cover the hemispheres, press the "Start" button, and when vacuum is reached, try to pull the hemispheres apart. Think about why a large force is required to separate them. ★Exhibit Description: Through mechanical interaction, this exhibit helps visitors understand the Magdeburg hemispheres experiment and experience atmospheric pressure. The exhibit consists of two sets of Magdeburg hemisphere models (one large and one small), a vacuum system, and a display stand. During participation, attach the hemispheres, press the "Start" button, and the vacuum pump evacuates the interior of the sphere; then try to separate the hemispheres. After a period following the interaction, the two hemispheres automatically release the vacuum. ★Scientific Principle: The Magdeburg hemispheres experiment proves that atmospheric pressure exists and is very powerful. In the experiment, the air inside the two hemispheres is removed, reducing the number of air particles inside. The external atmospheric pressure then presses the two hemispheres tightly together, making them difficult to separate. The more air removed, the greater the pressure on the hemispheres, and the harder it is to separate them.
