Centrifugal Force
★Exhibit Content: Centrifugal Force ★Interaction: Electromechanical Interaction ★Operation: Press the "Start" button and observe the changes of the two balls in the rotating oil. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a base, a turntable, acrylic cylinders, a button, oil, a ping-pong ball, and a steel ball. A circular turntable is set on the base. On the turntable, there are two cylindrical transparent containers tilted left and right in a V shape, filled with oil, each containing a ping-pong ball and a small ball. When the participant touches the start button on the tabletop, the turntable drives the oil in the cylindrical containers to rotate. Due to centrifugal force, the ping-pong ball that floats on top of the oil when stationary will sink, while the steel ball at the bottom of the container will float up. By observing the changes of the two balls in the rotating oil, participants learn about centrifugal force. ★Scientific Principle: Centrifugal force is a manifestation of inertia and does not actually exist. To make an object move in a circular path, it needs to be subjected to a force directed toward the center—the centripetal force. If a coordinate system is established with this object as the origin, it appears as if there is a force of equal magnitude and opposite direction to the centripetal force, causing the object to move away from the center of the circular motion. (When the force on the object is insufficient to provide the centripetal force required for circular motion, it appears as if the centrifugal force is greater than the centripetal force, and the object moves away from the center. This phenomenon is called "centrifugal phenomenon".)
