The Big Scale
★Exhibit Content: Lever Principle ★Interaction: Mechanical Interaction ★Operation: One visitor sits on the chair, and another visitor measures their weight by sliding the counterweight, thereby understanding the lever principle. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a graduated lever, a counterweight, a seat, and a support. When participating, a visitor first sits on the seat with both feet lifted, and another person adjusts the balance of the lever by moving the position of the counterweight. When the lever is horizontal, the scale on the lever shows the visitor's weight. Through this interactive experience, visitors can intuitively understand the lever principle and its applications in daily life, while feeling the importance of scientific principles in real life. ★Scientific Principle: The working principle of the large scale is based on the lever balance condition. When a lever is balanced, the two torques (the product of force and arm) acting on the lever must be equal in magnitude. Specifically, when a visitor sits on the seat of the scale, the counterweight balances the person's weight by moving its position. The weight and arm of the counterweight and the weight and arm of the person satisfy the lever balance condition: F1×L1=F2×L2 where F1 is the person's weight, L1 is the distance from the person to the fulcrum, F2 is the weight of the counterweight, and L2 is the distance from the counterweight to the fulcrum.
