Newton's First Law

Force & Mechanics

★Exhibit Content: Law of Inertia ★Interaction: Mechanical Interaction ★Operation: Press the start button to start the train model and observe the projectile and falling motion of the ball. Stop. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a platform, train model, track model, arch bridge model, ball launching device, protective cover, button, etc. When the visitor presses the start button, the train starts and accelerates. When the front of the train reaches the arch bridge, its speed becomes constant, and the ball launching device on the train throws the ball vertically upward. Due to inertia, after the train exits the arch bridge, the ball still falls into the launching hole. ★Scientific Principle: Newton's first law states that an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an external force. Since the train is moving at a constant speed, the ball inside the carriage has the same horizontal velocity as the train. When the ball is thrown vertically upward, due to inertia, it maintains its horizontal uniform motion and moves forward together with the train. Therefore, the thrown ball is seen to return to the corresponding position after crossing the arch bridge.
