Landslide Race
★Exhibit Content: Moment of Inertia ★Interaction: Mechanical Interaction ★Operation: Select any two wheels from the 6 wheels and place them at the high ends of the two tracks respectively. Then push the operating lever so that both wheels roll down simultaneously. ★Exhibit Description: This exhibit mainly consists of wheels, baffles, tracks, and a display stand, with two sets of interactive mechanisms. Two wheels are set on the tracks of the display stand. Each set of wheels has the same diameter and equal mass, but due to different mass distribution, the moment of inertia also differs. Visitors can arbitrarily fix two wheels at the top of the two tracks, and at the same height, simultaneously remove the baffles. They will find that the wheel with the metal block concentrated in the center reaches the finish line first and arrives first. ★Scientific Principle: Moment of inertia is a measure of the inertia of a rigid body rotating about an axis (the property of a rotating object to maintain its uniform circular motion or rest). The moment of inertia is determined only by the shape of the rigid body, the mass distribution, and the position of the axis of rotation, and is independent of the state of rotation of the rigid body about the axis (such as the magnitude of angular velocity). When two wheels have the same mass, the one with mass distributed farther from the center of the wheel axis has a larger moment of inertia. Under the same torque, the one with a larger moment of inertia has a smaller angular acceleration. Through two sets of interactive mechanisms, this exhibit introduces the influence of mass distribution on the magnitude of the moment of inertia.

★Exhibit Content: Moment of inertia, mass distribution effect on rolling speed, classic mechanics interactive science experience ★Interaction: Handle adjusts table tilt angle, multiple rollers synchronized racing comparison, pure mechanical manual interaction ★Operation: 1. Press the adjustment handle on the side of the device to adjust the overall tilt angle of the table, place 3 sets of rollers with identical shape and total weight but different internal mass distribution at the starting point of the track and release them simultaneously. 2. Observe the entire process of the 3 sets of rollers sliding down the track and racing, compare the sliding speed of different rollers, and record which roller reaches the end of the track first. 3. Adjust the table tilt angle multiple times and repeat the experiment to verify the combined effect of tilt angle and moment of inertia on rolling speed. ★Exhibit Description: "Landslide Race" is an adjustable slope tabletop science exhibit on the theme of rigid body moment of inertia, belonging to the classic mechanics science exhibition area, and a recommended exhibit by PopsciCat Exhibit Store. The exhibit features a bright yellow vertical sheet metal base with a white curved metal operating tabletop. Multiple parallel transparent tracks are mounted on the tabletop, with a lifting adjustment handle on the side. The cabinet interior is equipped with a purely manual tabletop tilt lifting transmission mechanism, requiring no external power. The exhibit rollers have unchanged shape and total weight, only the internal mass distribution is altered. Combined with the adjustable slope tabletop, it intuitively demonstrates the effect of moment of inertia on rolling speed, transforming abstract rigid body mechanics concepts into observable racing experiments. ★Scientific Principle: 1. The rolling process of an object is constrained by the moment of inertia. The smaller the moment of inertia, the faster the object accelerates, and the rolling speed increases more rapidly; the larger the moment of inertia, the more gravitational potential energy is consumed in rotation, and the forward speed is slower. 2. The moment of inertia is determined by both the total mass and the mass distribution of the object. The more concentrated the mass is at the axis of rotation, the smaller the moment of inertia; the more the mass is biased toward the outer edge, the larger the moment of inertia. 3. Adjusting the table tilt angle changes the component of gravity along the track, altering the total driving force for the rollers to slide down. This allows comparison of the speed differences caused by moment of inertia at different slopes.
